What is a craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD)?

CMD stands for craniomandibular dysfunction - a functional disorder in the interaction between the skull (cranium), lower jaw (mandible) and chewing muscles.
The temporomandibular joint is often misloaded or overstressed, which can lead to muscular tension and restricted movement - with far-reaching consequences for the neck, shoulders and even the back.

The causes are manifold:

  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Malocclusion or misaligned teeth
  • Stress-related muscle tension
  • Poor posture or spinal misalignments
  • Accident-related trauma (e.g. whiplash)

What are typical symptoms of CMD?

  • Jaw cracking or pain when chewing
  • Headaches & migraines (especially in the temple area)
  • Tension in the neck and shoulders
  • Restricted mouth opening
  • Tinnitus, ringing in the ears or dizziness
  • Feeling of pressure in the head or jaw area
  • Teeth grinding and morning jaw pain

Many patients have years of complaints without recognising the true cause in the jaw area - with our jaw physiotherapy, we help to understand the connections and treat them in a targeted manner.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions about CMD

Common signs are jaw clicking, pain when chewing, tension headaches or one-sided tension - often without any recognisable cause for the tooth.

In many cases, the symptoms can be significantly improved or completely resolved with targeted therapy.

This depends on the severity - usually 4-8 sessions are sufficient. In chronic cases, the therapy may take longer.

Not always - physiotherapy is sufficient in mild cases. If teeth grinding is severe, a splint from the dentist may be useful.
