The Functional Threshold Power - short FTP - is one of the most important performance values in cycling and endurance training. It describes the maximum average power (in watts) that an athlete can produce over a given distance. 60 minutes constant can be maintained, without over-acidifying.
A correctly determined FTP value serves as the basis for training planning, performance diagnostics and competition control.
The FTP is defined as the highest possible performance that can be maintained over an hour without the body tipping into an anaerobic state.
It therefore stands for the boundary between the aerobic (with oxygen) and the anaerobic (without oxygen) metabolism - and thus also for the point at which fatigue increases significantly faster.
In practical training, the FTP value is usually determined using a 20-minute test in which 95 % of the average performance is used as an approximate value.
A clearly defined FTP value helps to better control training sessions and make progress measurable.
It enables:
Individual training zones (e.g. for basic endurance, threshold training or VO2max intervals)
Avoid overtrainingas the load is dosed in a more targeted manner
Optimise competition performancethrough pacing strategies, for example
Track progress objectively (e.g. due to increasing FTP value)
The best known is the 20-minute FTP test - a structured performance test carried out on the bike (indoor or outdoor).
The following applies:
20 minutes Full load maintain
Calculate average power in watts
Result × 0.95 = FTP
Alternatively, modern power meters, smart trainers or apps such as Zwift, Wahoo, TrainerRoad or Garmin can automatically determine the FTP value over several training sessions (so-called Passive FTP estimation).
FTP is a key reference value, especially in cycling. It helps to define training zones and measure progress. Nevertheless, it is only one building block among many - further factors should be taken into account for a complete performance profile.
For more precise training control, it is worth combining FTP with:
Heart rate data
VO₂max (maximum oxygen uptake)
Lactate threshold
Critical Power (CP)
These parameters provide additional information on resilience, recovery capacity and metabolic processes.
FTP measures the threshold power, but not:
How well you recover
How strong your Mental resilience is
How efficient your Technology or Cadence is
How well your Nutrition Your training supports
A holistic training approach therefore always takes several factors into account.
Use FTP as Orientation for training intensities - but complete it through regular diagnostics, technical coaching and regenerative measures. This enables you to achieve your goals efficiently and in the long term.
