What is a Ultrasound therapy?

Ultrasound therapy is an established physical treatment method in which high-frequency sound waves are directed specifically into the painful tissue.
These sound waves create a micromechanical vibration in the cells, which stimulates blood circulation and cell metabolism. This can reduce inflammation more quickly and promote tissue regeneration.

In combination with a contact gel, the transducer is applied directly to the affected area of the body - the treatment is painless and pleasantly warming.

I had an acute back problem and managed to get some last-minute appointments with Pascal. Although he hardly had any free slots at first, he even gave up his lunch break to help me. I really appreciated that. He was able to help me a lot, and thanks to the exercises, my back has been significantly better ever since. Highly recommended.

This is how ultrasound therapy works

  1. Medical history & individualised coordination
We clarify your complaints, objectives and whether ultrasound is the appropriate method.
  2. Applying the contact gel
A special gel is applied to the skin so that the sound waves are optimally transmitted.
  3. Treatment with the ultrasound probe
The transducer is moved in a circular motion over the affected area - the treatment takes about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Optional: combination with active therapy
Depending on requirements, we supplement this with manual therapy, lymphatic drainage or training.

Frequently asked questions about ultrasound therapy

Ultrasound therapy is a form of electrotherapy that uses sound waves to generate heat and vibration in deep-seated tissue (micromassage). This promotes blood circulation, improves metabolism and accelerates healing processes in injuries to tendons, ligaments and muscles.

The frequency of application depends heavily on the clinical picture. As a rule, we recommend 2 to 3 sessions per week. In the case of acute complaints, a series of 6 to 10 treatments can already achieve significant improvements. As part of an individual therapy plan, our physiotherapists will determine the optimal frequency for you.

Ultrasound therapy is used particularly successfully in our practice in Basel for:

  • Tendonitis (e.g. tennis elbow or Achilles tendon irritation)
  • Muscle tension and strains
  • Osteoarthritis and joint pain
  • scar adhesions
  • calcific tendonitis

No, the treatment is completely pain-free. Most patients merely experience a pleasant, deep-acting warmth. Since the intensity is individually adjusted to your sensation and the affected tissue, the therapy is very safe and comfortable.

Yes, ultrasound therapy is a recognised physiotherapy service. If the treatment has been prescribed by a doctor, the costs are covered by Swiss basic health insurance (KVG). We bill your health insurance company directly.

Although the method is very safe, it should not be used in certain cases, for example directly over metal implants, pacemakers, during acute inflammation with fever or during pregnancy (in the trunk area). Before the first treatment, we carry out a brief screening to guarantee maximum safety.
